Celia, a spirited 74-year-old Burgess Hill resident, shares how her cherished home and heartfelt poppy displays bring warmth, remembrance, and a sense of community to West Sussex.

In a cosy corner of Burgess Hill, West Sussex, lives our resident, Celia—a spirited, 74-year-old woman with a heart that shines as brightly as the poppies she lovingly displays each year.

For the past 14 years, Celia has called her flat home, a cherished sanctuary she made her own after a chapter of change. Through her thoughtful touches, she has transformed her residence into a place of beauty, resilience, and warmth.

But it’s not just Celia’s flat that she’s made memorable. For six years, she’s brought a powerful touch of remembrance to her community by decorating the front of her block with handmade poppies. Each year, her display grows more vibrant, drawing smiles and admiration from neighbours and passers-by who pause to take in the moving tribute.

Her tenacity and love are infectious; her neighbours look forward to her display each year, and the community gathers, smiles, and remembers, thanks to her.

Celia’s story is one of quiet strength, of community and memory woven together by her poppies. Through her simple yet profound act of decorating her home, Celia keeps the spirit of remembrance alive—a legacy that brightens her community with beauty, gratitude, and honour for those we’ve lost.
